FLOCK’s Subsidized Residency Program offers free rehearsal space at our studio in NW Portland. In our attempt to prioritize access and address inequity, we are opening this call to movement artists who exist at the intersections of two or more of the following communities: Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Disabled, Immigrant, Trans, Elder, Queer, Low income, Fat, and Parents/Caregivers. All types of dance backgrounds and movement practices are eligible, but keep in mind that our floor is intended for barefoot or soft-sole dance shoe rehearsals only.
About FLOCK:
Established in 2014, FLOCK is a dance center for movement exploration, creation and artistic practice, dedicated to Portland's dance artists. FLOCK provides a creative hub for artists who relate to dance as an essential vehicle for grappling with the world. FLOCK is a dynamic incubator for risky creative endeavors that radically impacts the ecology of the Portland dance and art communities. We are thrilled to be a space in PDX that inspires experimentation both in the making of art and in the making of sustainable communities.
Program Details:
This offering is for six months of free space. The time is structured as follows: one three-hour rehearsal per week, that recurs on the same day every week. We are not able to accommodate schedule changes. The residency runs October 1st, 2024 through March 31st, 2025. The possible day/time slots we have available to offer are: Mondays 9am-12pm, Wednesdays 12pm-3pm, Fridays 3pm-6pm or 6pm-9pm, and Sundays 6pm-9pm. If none of these times work for you then we will not be able to offer you the residency.
The residency is primarily for research/rehearsals/process. This residency is not intended for teaching classes. If you are interested in teaching classes at FLOCK when you are a resident, we can have a conversation about separate teaching opportunities. It is possible to host an informal showing at FLOCK at some point in the residency, but it is not required or expected. Keep in mind, FLOCK has overhead lights on dimmers, some shop lights, and a basic sound system, meaning the showing would have minimal tech support.
Studio Details:
ADA accessible, with heating/cooling, 1400 sq. foot sprung hardwood floors, basic sound system, mirrors that can be covered by curtains, and two air purifiers.
If selected, you will be asked to sign a liability waiver and FLOCK residency agreement. Once you sign the agreement, you will have one orientation meeting with one of the FLOCK stewards, where we will discuss the resident agreements.
Subsidized Residency includes:
• One three hour scheduled rehearsal slots per week (vs two for full time residents).
• The ability to teach outside of their time slot (if the schedule allows) for the rate of $15/hr
Subsidized Residency does not include:
• Hosting public events, teaching classes, or doing anything that includes charging money during resident time, is not included as a part of residency
